Kalimpong is a hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at an average elevation of 1,250 meters (4,101 ft.).The town is headquarters of the Kalimpong subdivision, a part of the district of Darjeeling. The Indian Army’s 27 Mountain Division is located in the outskirts of the town.
Kalimpong being the formation of HQ meant the presence of a large number of army personnel getting frequently transferred from one station to another even in mid-session. So, it was increasingly getting difficult for the children of the army personnel to get admission in good school in and around Kalimpong.
Therefore, the need of the hour was its own school-a school where children would be taken in at any time of the year and where they would easily fit in.
Therefore, in 1987, the school was named Army Public School and was operated in the barracks that were allotted for the purpose.
In 1995, the Army School was brought under the aegis of AWES and began operating from a temporary location in the MES barrack and functioned as two wings-the Pre Primary Wing and Secondary Wing.
The School not only catered to the needs of the children of army personnel but also the civilian population in and around the neighborhood.
But in 1999, due to the Kargil Operation, 27 Mtn Div moved to Belampur which resulted in the relocation of all the families. The station was taken over by 164.
In 2007, after successfully completing the Kargil Operation, 27 Mtn Div was relieved. By then, the School had been upgraded to class VII and had successfully been affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi in August 2008.
In 2010, the first batch of students appeared for CBSE which resulted in cent percent result with 75% as the highest percentage.
Thereafter, the students have been performing well. Many students have been successfully getting admission in reputed schools and colleges in different parts of the country.
